Complete guide to obtaining worker screening clearance in New South Wales
Last updated: November 2, 2025
All aged care workers in NSW must complete NDIS Worker Screening Check before commencing employment. This national screening system replaced the previous NSW Working with Children Check for aged care workers in 2021.
The screening process assesses your suitability to work with people with disability and older Australians. It includes national police checks, review of relevant state and territory records, and assessment of any relevant findings.
Enroll in Certificate IV in Ageing Support through a registered training organization (RTO). You can apply for worker screening before completing your qualification, but you'll need it before starting work placement or employment.
You'll need to provide proof of identity documents. Acceptable documents include:
Apply online through the Service NSW website or in person at a Service NSW center. The online application takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
Application Fee: $80
Valid for 5 years. Payment accepted via credit card, debit card, or BPAY.
Standard processing time is 2-4 weeks. Complex applications (e.g., interstate or overseas police checks required) may take 6-8 weeks.
Important
You cannot work in aged care until your clearance is issued. Plan ahead and apply at least 6 weeks before your intended start date.
Once approved, you'll receive a digital NDIS Worker Screening Check clearance via email. You can access your clearance through the Service NSW app or website. Employers can verify your clearance using your clearance number.
